With that said, understand that it is perfectly possible to install a renewable energy/sustainable energy system without first changing any part of your energy use. AND that the system you install will still reduce the overall dependence on non-renewable sources of energy. So if the idea of reducing use has made you not want to continue with your renewable energy/sustainable energy ideas, stop now, and return to the previous page. You can always do some conservation later if you wish. The easiest way to start conserving electrical energy in your home is to make sure lights and other appliances are turned off when you're not using them. In my house, I allow myself to have no more than 2 lights on at any one time. The next easiest thing you could do is to replace your standard bulbs with CFL bulbs. These use about 1/5 of the energy of a standard bulb. You get the same amount of light from a 23 watt CFL bulb as you do from a 100 watt standard bulb. There are CFL bulbs made to fit many different sockets and fixtures. CFL bulbs do cost more than standard incandescent bulbs but they also last many years longer. CFL bulbs are available in most places that sell light bulbs, hardware stores, drug stores, some food supermarkets. Another relatively painless way to save electrical power around your house is to pay attention to power cubes. Power cubes are those little black boxes that plug into a wall and supply your cellphone, your answering machine, your BlueTooth devices, your laptop computer, and many other household electronic devices with power. These cubes draw a small amount of power whether they are feeding power to their intended devices or not. Unplugging the cubes from the wall when they're not being used prevents this phantom use of power. Another alternative is to put these cubes on a power strip and turn the power strip on when you're charging and off when you're done charging. Some appliances use tremendous amounts of elecrical power. Space heaters, elecric stoves, electric furnaces, electric hot water heaters, air condiitoners, refrigerators, all consume large amounts of elecrical power. If you must use these appliances, getting the most efficient one available will help a lot. If you already have an appliance, just replacing it with a more efficient model may not be the best action you can take. For instance. It takes a large amount of power to manufacture your refrigerator and ship it to you. Were you to consider buying a more efficient model, the difference in power use between the new model and the existing model might never be equalled by the amount of power needed to manufacture and ship the new model to you. The same may be true for other large electrical appliances and perhaps even cars. So, it may be more efficient to keep using the existing model. Careful comparison shopping and some internet research may be necessary to determine the best route. There are devices that can tell you how much electrical power each appliance in your life uses. It is probably possible to power your entire house as it is today with a renewable/sustainable energy system, but it would probably be extremely expensive. Furthermore, as a group, if we humans continue to use increasing amounts of electrical power, eventually, we will use more than can be generated by renewable/sustainable sources (today). It is impossible to say what kinds of generating capabilities will be available in the future. |
